The Art (and Technology of) Cooking

cooking-in-winter-blog

With my boys, the winter months have me busy in the kitchen!

As my family will attest, I love to cook. And eat. There is just something about food that is comforting. When I serve my family a delicious meal that I have made from scratch, with fresh, healthy ingredients (preferably from our garden), it makes me…happy!

Years ago, my grandfather used to laugh at me when he saw me in the kitchen with my laptop, searching for recipes to re-create and make my own. All he had ever known was a traditional cookbook! Nowadays, smartphones and tablets make finding recipes even easier. Stores like Williams-Sonoma even sell kitchen stands for tablets, like this one.

Here are a few more ways technology can be useful in the kitchen:

  • How-to Videos

Who has time to watch hours and hours of cooking shows? If you’re new to cooking, or maybe just trying out a new technique, sites like the Food Network and Saveur, offer easy-to-follow tutorials on-demand.

  • Kitchen Accessories

An electronic meat thermometer is a must-have in my kitchen for roasts – and on my deck in the summer time for grilling! I love the simplicity of receiving a notification when my meat is perfectly cooked. Something that I need (hint, hint to my husband if you’re reading this) is a quality set of kitchen cutlery that self-sharpens as you pull each knife out of its slot in the storage block. No more dull knives!

  • “Connected” Appliances

Let’s say you’re leaving the house for the day and have a crockpot meal prepped that requires 6 hours of cooking time – but you’re going to be gone for 10 hours. Rather than have the slow cooker default to the “warm” setting for 4 hours, why not start cooking the meal at a later time using a smartphone connection? There are even appliances and apps available for when you’re pressed for time in the evening and would like to have the oven preheated before you get home!

So what’s cooking at my house today?

Well, here in western New York State the weather is damp and cold, with a mix of snow flurries and clouds. I decided that it was the ideal weather for slow cooking beef stew in my Dutch oven after a brisk hike with my family. Mmm, it smells so good. Is it dinner time yet?
