How to Select the Correct Printer Ribbon

printer ribbonThermal printers and ribbon selection is a common topic I see come up when talking with customers. While it is easy to select one extreme or another in terms of the cost, an expensive ribbon does not always equal the best performance in this category. So how should you select the correct ribbon for your printer?

Here are 3 questions to ask yourself to help you select the correct printer ribbon:

  1. What material is my label made of?

The label you print on will determine what kind of ribbon will best meet your needs. Your options range from a paper label with a matte or gloss coating to a synthetic label with a matte or gloss coating. It is best to first determine what kind of label you have before determining which ribbon you will use.

  1. What kind of environment will my label be subject to?

Determining the environment your label will be subject to will greatly influence what kind of ribbon you should use. If the label is a synthetic material and subject to any chemicals or lengthy outdoor exposure times, you will need a high quality resin-based ribbon. If the label is paper and will have low exposure to any elements or chemicals, then a wax ribbon or wax/resin hybrid will do the trick.

  1. What type of ribbon options are available?

Generally, there are three levels of ribbons you can choose from.

These options are: wax, wax/resin hybrid, and resin only.

As mentioned above, the type of label you are using will greatly influence your ribbon selection. With that said, I have included a quick overview for you that should make your decision easier.

  • A wax ribbon-
These are best suited for a paper label. This enables the wax to adhere to the label and have less of a chance for smearing or chipping.

  • A wax/resin hybrid ribbon-
These are best suited for a high quality coated paper label or a synthetic label prone to lower external environmental factors. This will provide a good mix of adhesion and smear resistance while allowing some level of environmental protection.

  • A resin ribbon –
These ribbons are best utilized with synthetic labels with glossy finish or labels that will be exposed to the outside elements/chemical environment. This allows for a solid bond between the ribbon and label and provides extra protection against anything which may come in contact with the label.

While there are some other factors that may assist in selecting the appropriate ribbon, these are the most common and important topics that need to be addressed for a successful pairing.
