Barcode Apps for a Happy Marriage

My husband and I will be celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary this summer! I am so excited about this milestone, that you might even accuse me of viewing the world through rose-colored glasses. All I can think about these days is our anniversary and what we should do to celebrate. So naturally, when I heard about a couple of new barcode apps, I began to think about them through the lens of my marriage…And realized that now it’s time to take the rose-colored glasses off. Uh oh.

Problem #1: The Alarm Clock Conundrum

Here’s the deal. My husband typically wakes up an hour earlier than I do. Unfortunately for me, I am a light sleeper, so when his phone alarm goes off by the bedside, it wakes me up. What’s worse is that he is a “snoozer,” hitting the snooze button several times each morning so just as I am about to doze back off, his alarm sounds again. It’s a vicious cycle and it drives me CRAZY!

The good news is that the new “I’m Up Alarm” app (coming soon) for Apple and Android is going to take our marriage to a whole new level of bliss.

The alarm can be set the night before, as any other alarm, but here’s the catch. You can only turn it off by using your phone to scan a QR code in another room of your house, such as a code on a coffee mug or magnet in the kitchen. Problem solved: Husband gets up, goes downstairs to turn off the alarm and grab his coffee, while I drift back off to sleep. Win, win!

Television

Problem #2: “What are we going to watch tonight?”

I will always choose a funny, lighthearted tv show or movie – preferably one that is a romantic comedy. Call me predictable, call me sappy, I don’t care. I’m not going to change! My husband, on the other hand, likes a wide variety of screen options. Sports are a big hit, with the fantasy and slapstick comedy genres coming in at a close second and third. But it’s when he turns a documentary on that I usually have to leave the room and find something else to do. Can you say B.O.R.I.N.G?

Enter the “Movie Database” app. All you have to do is create a free account and then use your smartphone to barcode scan in all of your movie titles to create a database. (Keep in mind that after you scan a certain number of titles, you will be charged a fee for additional titles). After your database is complete, all you have to do on movie night is go to the app and “shake” to select a random item in your collection. Fair’s fair, right?

Thanks to these creative barcode apps, I can put those rose-colored glasses back on and enjoy both sleeping in AND movie night. Now if only there was a barcode app that could choose the perfect spot to celebrate our anniversary…
