Advantech Enters Strategic Alliances with Intel and Wind River for IoT Applications, Part 4: The UTX-3115 IoT Gateway

I previously covered Part 1 (Content of the IoT), Part 2 (Intel’s Intelligent Systems Framework) and Part 3 (Wind River’s Intelligent Device Platform) of Advantech product engineer Ken Chang’s enlightening PowerPoint presentation, UTX-3115 for Internet of Things (IoT) Applications. Chang’s presentation is available in a 22-minute YouTube video. This post covers Part 4 of that presentation, Advantech’s UTX-3115 IoT Gateway.

Advantech’s new miniature UTX-3115 is more than the ideal bridge for machine-to-machine communication, it’s an Intel Intelligent Systems Framework (ISF)-ready solution that not only functions as an IoT gateway but also works as an IoT end device. The UTX-3115 was developed specifically for IoT applications and integrates Intel’s ISF and Wind River’s Intelligent Device Platform (IDP) solutions, readying it to manage, monitor and secure all connected intelligent devices – anytime, anywhere, any device. In short, it’s a complete IoT solution.

The UTX-3115 is an industrial-grade fanless embedded box PC designed for operation within a wide temperature range of -20° to 60° Celsius. It deploys Intel’s Atom (Bay Trail) E3800 System-on-Chip to deliver key features that include:

  • Intel’s power-efficient 4th-generation Atom (Bay Trail) Dual-Core E3826 1.46-GHz processor, the first Intel SoC to utilize the 22-nm technology.
  • Miniature footprint: 5.6 by 4.6 by 1.4 inches.
  • Dual gigabit LAN: one Intel 1210 AT and one Realtek RTL8111G Ethernet port.
  • Support for one 2.5-inch HDD or SSD storage device.
  • One half-size and one full-size Mini-PCIe expansion slot. The full-size Mini-PCIe slot also supports mSATA.
  • One HDMI, one micro HDMI and one VGA port.
  • One USB2.0, one USB3.0 and one micro-USB2.0 port.
  • Optional provision for VESA, DIN-rail or wall mounts.
  • RS-232 and RS-422/485 serial ports for connection to sensors or control devices for data aggregation.

The UTX-31115’s wealth of I/O connectivity and performance capacity combine to produce the ideal small embedded IoT gateway or end device. But the UTX is not just tiny and portable, it is also rugged, purpose designed to survive a variety of outdoor environments, enabling it to be deployed in almost any scenario, including outdoor digital signage, portable medical devices and industrial automation.

A typical example of the UTX-3115’s role as a versatile, intelligent IoT gateway was demonstrated recently when one of the world’s highest-volume air conditioning enterprises successfully implemented the IoT gateway into their existing HVAC systems. The E3800-powered gateway greatly simplified deployment, allowing the company to extract never-before-tapped data from existing units while bypassing legacy infrastructure thanks to the gateway’s 3G-wireless capability.
