Two common printer types are thermal transfer and direct thermal. Thermal-transfer barcode printers facilitate at high print speeds and produce labels that are practically indestructible. Direct-thermal printing requires no additional ink or toner and only requires maintaining black label stock. Direct thermal is commonly used for shipping labels, patient identification labels, and receipts, etc. Common printer types include:
- Desktop: commonly found in hospitals, medical labs, automobile service shops, shipping/mail centers, and stock rooms
- Industrial: commonly found in medium-size manufacturing, distribution, and warehousing environments
- Mobile: commonly found in the field used in warehousing, shipping, merchandising, and payment processing
- Receipt: commonly found in retail environments
- RFID: commonly found in industrial manufacturing, warehousing, and logistics applications
