Omni-directional Linear Bar Code Scanners
Omnidirectional Linear Barcode Scanners are typically used for applications where handsfree scanning is required, or when the barcode cannot be easily or quickly lined up with the scanner. Most are stationary and are mounted to a countertop or wall, but some omnidirectional scanners can also be handheld.
These types of scanners are used most frequently for Point Of Sale (POS) applications. The scanners can be used in a presentation mode, where products are held in front of the scanner while the bar code is scanned. And for some scanners, the product can also be swept past the front of the scanner and the moving bar code will be read successfully.
The scanner technology is laser-based, using a multi-faceted, spinning mirror. These barcode scanners are typically connected to a computer via Keyboard Wedge, USB Keyboard Emulation, or RS-232 Serial interface. Other interfaces, used with special cables, enable the scanner to be connected directly to a number of different POS terminals.
These bar code scanners are typically provided in convenience kits - scanner plus a specific interface cable (and an AC power supply, if required).
