True 2D Bar Code Scanners
True 2-Dimensional Barcode Scanners are typically used for applications where a fairly large amount of data must be contained in a barcode which can only occupy a small amount of space. Since 2D scanners are omnidirectional, and since they can read all types of barcodes, linear (1D) and PDF-417 as well as 2D, they can also be used when there is no time to line up the barcode with the scanner. Most are handheld, but typically desktop stands are also available, so the scanners can be stationary and automatically scan barcodes presented to them.
A popular application for these types of scanners is to read the PDF417 barcode on a driver's license or on a vehicle registration. Another application is to scan the true 2D barcodes on shipping labels. New models are also suitable for use at the Point-Of-Sale (POS), where they read barcodes at any angle (omnidirectionally), whether the scanners are handheld or in a stand mounted to a countertop.
The scanner technology is an area imager with no moving parts, with built-in barcode illumination. These barcode scanners are typically connected to a computer via one of a variety of USB interfaces, or via an RS-232 Serial interface. Other interfaces, used with specific cables, make it possible to connect the scanner directly to a variety of different POS terminals.
These bar code scanners are typically provided bundled in kits, which include the scanner plus the appropriate interface cable (and an AC power supply, if needed for the particular interface).
